What is the difference between psychological evaluations and individual counseling?

Psychological testing aims to clarify the client’s diagnosis and treatment options. Individual counseling is focused on treatment of symptoms or a disorder.

What takes place during a psychological evaluation?

The process begins with taking a thorough history, then conducting psychological evaluations based on your specific needs. We assess cognitive ability, personality, adaptive functioning, neurodevelopmental challenges, behavioral issues, and memory — with a feedback session provided afterward.

How long does the evaluation take?

An evaluation can take about four to six hours throughout one or two sessions.

How long does it take to get the results of a psychological evaluation?

It usually takes about two to three weeks to receive your evaluation.

What takes place in therapy?

Therapy starts with history-taking, then helps clients identify and express emotions, improve coping with stress, and address past trauma and self-worth concerns.

How long are counseling sessions?

Counseling sessions are 50 minutes.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring a copy of your insurance card, any previous psychological evaluations, a copy of an IEP or 504 plan, and applicable health records. Eyeglasses are also required for testing.

What time should I arrive for my appointment?

Please arrive 10–15 minutes before your appointment to ensure your paperwork is complete.

Are you accepting new clients?

Yes — we are accepting new clients.

What is the referral process like?

MaineCare clients can self-refer by calling us. To get started, just give us a call and we’ll walk you through the next steps.

Will you confirm my appointment?

Yes. We will call you within two weeks of your appointment to confirm your appointment time and date.

What happens if I don’t confirm my appointment?

If you do not confirm the appointment within 3 days of your appointment, we will consider the appointment canceled.
